From Community to Careers: Strengthening a Network of Research Data Scientists

Research Data Scientists (RDScis) are a distinct group of digital Research Technical Professionals, operating at the intersection of traditional research, research software engineering and advanced statistics. However, across UK research organisations, this role is not well defined or supported, being represented by different job titles, career paths, and levels of recognition. This makes it harder to connect, develop as leaders, and get institutional backing.

This project will build a picture of UK RDScis: who and where they are, and what support they need. We will analyse information gathered at a planned community event, RDSci Connect 2026, covering roles, skills and challenges, and generate an initial evidence base for future engagement.

Funding from DisCouRSE will let us capitalise on this unique opportunity, developing this event’s learnings and outcomes into long-term positive impact. Draft definitions of an RDSci will be finalised and added to online collections, and community consensus statements published. We will establish working groups for areas such as skills, careers, and leadership. Learnings will drive the objectives of a second, larger community event in 2027.

The project will aim to create a well-connected and more visible UK community of RDSci professionals, alongside practical resources to support career development and institutional recognition.
